Good idea! Clean it, run sandpaper over it to give the new paint "teeth," remove hardware, wipe off again after sanding, let dry and paint. Pre-paint primer, coats of paint needed and finishing touches depends on the furniture
and the paint. Good luck!
You can also use Liquid Sandpaper to rough up the surface that is much easier to apply. Look on Pinterest for inspiration too.

Start by sanding off any shiny areas, wipe the furniture down to insure it is clean with no sanding residue, etc left behind. Then, I typically use one coat of primer...then two coats of a good latex paint.
