Having lived off the grid and used generators, they can be noisy, and it depends on what your going to use it for and where your going to put it....check consumer reports is always my go to.... http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/generators/buying-guide

you need to talk to a generator pro. My gramps had them out on the farm. You kind a need to know how much electric you use daily..and what issential to be powered up. Save up bills or get a good year worth of data from the electric co.
oh one mor thing ac units remove the humidity in a building. It conendences to water. So if you don't have it outside give it a bucket.
I have seen a/c units sold on both HSN and QVC but have no idea of their effectivness, but they seem to sell like hotcakes. For generators, I would go to Consumer Reports as they provide decent non biased reviews. I have a Home Depot special that was a hand me down from my ex and for my needs it is fine, as I just want it to run both my refrigerators, I can make my own light, etc. Original cost was probably in the $400 range and is not used that often. Make sure you have a proper place to store the gas cans.
