get a flapper cover...like in aluminum that opens only from the inside w the fan blowing. You will probably lose some of the 'draw' from the fan so you'll have to run it longer to clear out cooking smells. My fan exits out a sidewall..like it or not...even w a flapper cover i still notice a difference in that spot in the winter.
You are missing or have a stuck damper that would automatically close off the flue when not in use. You may need to replace the unit.
If it just recently started its possible there is an inline damper somewhere in the exhaust pipe. It may have struck open from dirt and grease. Could also be right at the hood to pipe connection. Also consider getting a dampered top cap for the roof so no birds or varmints can get in.
