In the shade
My mother always planted them along the north side of the house. Did well in Iowa.
Carla HusbandJust nowHostas are one of those plants that will pretty much survive anywhere. Ive had them in the sun and shade and they have done well in either spot. I dont think you can ever kill a hosta. In a year or two, you can start to separate them and plant some in another place in your yard. They are nice for a border. They are hard to dig up and to separate, use a hatchet if needed, you will not harm the plant at all. There are also many varieties of hostas. Have fun.
I have them on N, S, and E sides of my house and all do great. The N is mostly shaded but S is sunny and they also grow big. I disagree with Carla about separation difficulty. I just used a shovel and cut off amount I wanted. They grow back fast to look good again. I did this just 2 weeks ago. Both left parts and cut off parts growing fine.
borders and I agree with the above comments. The only down fall is that slugs love them as do Deer so be ready to fight back. A small can of vinegar once you start to see the holes on hostas near the plant and I love Liquid Fence from HD keeps the deer from many of your bushes , plants and flowers.
