a hungry one...some kind of muncher..snails, slugs, grasshoppers, or the bigger guys: rabbits, ground hogs, sometimeseven voles...deer, you need. To be a detective. Is it overnight? Are there lime trails? Can you see a bite like damage? Did they just mow it down?
