where are you located? Do you plan on carting in and out? They do better in the ground where roots can spread. But until it gets too big for it...you can.
If you are not doing container gardens yes. Remove the bottom and place on the ground. Dig an inch or so down to remove grass and plant. But do not fill the barrel with soil. I recommend a ground cover plant like snow in the mountain
I have a gardenia in a tall pot, for me; the barrel do not have much deepness for the roots to grow unless the barrel is tall enough not like the ones we see in the nurseries, home depot etc. it depend of the kind of gardenia have; there are some that are natural small than other kinds, I have the one that grows at least 5' feet.
Get some sturdy wheels on the barrel, get some holes in the bottom for drainage, attach a strong belt or other pulling strap to the middle. Fill up the bottom half with empty plastic bottles with the caps on. Put two burlap sacks (or other rough open weave material, but not your fanciest crafting burlap--it fades) on top of the bottles. Pour in "clean" dirt from a nursery, then topsoil. Lots of settling will be going on, so wait a couple of days before planting anything. After a little wait, be ready to add more soil. Then dig a hole a little deeper than the pot your gardenia bush is in. There's plenty of space. Unpot, plant, water if the soil is dry, wait a week before fertilizing. Enjoy your gardenias 😇
