How do you create a raised garden for vegetables that is low cost?

I got old window boxes from yard sales and hung them along the side of my deck railings.

Everyones idea of "low cost" is different. Making out of untreated cedar planks is great, but almost any lumber on sale will do. Plus brackets, screws and landscape fabric, all available at home improvement stores. Another option is cinder blocks, my opinion is depending on size could cost more than lumber - just depends on what your goal is and how much you have budgeted for the project.

The cheapest way is to just mound the soil as high as you can! If that's not high enough (like for me!), then you just have to price materials using wood or stacking the concrete blocks. If you use the concrete, you can make it less obnoxious by using a garden pump sprayer and spray the outside with some concrete stain to help it blend with the ground around (or get artistic) and maybe lay a board across the holes on top (or plant in them). I have the same problem because of my back and knees - but haven't yet found anything that was truly "inexpensive". And I live in Fl where concrete "should" be inexpensive. It isn't anymore. I've actually thought about galv metal roofing, painted - but don't think it would look good....
