Remove the doorknob and buy some Citristrip at Lowe's. It will temoveall the paint.

  • Acetone, like nail polish remover, might help. Soak a rag in the acetone and allow it to sit on the knob for a few minutes to allow it to soften. Be sure to do this in a well ventilated area. You should be able to scrap off most and then sand.

strip the knobs of the old paint..I like Citris strip. Prime the knobs before applying paint. I have seen similar stuff happen when an oil based paint was applied over latex paint.

If you use Citrisolv or other pain remover, you might apply it then put the knobs inside plastic bags while the stripper works. Also less messy!

I saw on tv that you can put them in crockpot In water and the paint will peel off. Put on high and let the crockpot do the work. They did hinges and screws. Never tried it myself but just an idea!
