End Grain Cobble Block Wood Tile Flooring

Just wondering what people thought about our end grain wood tile flooring idea.
So many different ways to lay out. What's your favorite?

I've seen this done before (years ago) on the Bob Villa show. I thought it was amazing and a fantastic way to get a grand look for pennies compared to HUGE dollars.

This has so many possibilities, depending on pattern used and type of grain in wood used. Nice job!!!

How thick do you cut your pucks?

    Amazing!!! Luv it!

Like Wendy, I saw this on the Bob Villa show. Guess it made an impression; I've never forgotten it. Of the layouts you've shown, I prefer--by a great margin--the third. The other two are interesting but, IMO, not as classy as the last. Have you already done it or are you just getting layout input? Would love to see the finished floors.

We've only made small samples. We cut then from 3/4" up to 2". We also have round slices, but we haven't laid out any samples boards yet. Just on our walls. Looks like this.. but I'm still "iffy" whether I like it! lol Thanks everyone for your input! ;) These are the rounds that we used for some wall paneling. It's alot of work and I think would look better with some sort of finish. What do you guys think?

No matter what style you do, I would think you would need to at least seal the wood, and you could use a tinted sealer. The wall rounds are very pale, I would think a tint that would warm up the color would help. I like the 2nd and 3rd styles over the round that was used on the wall, I find the rounds very busy, and it would not be conducive to relaxing for me. I'm looking forward to seeing what you actually end up doing!

I actually saw this on Bath Crashers done with walnut end pieces. I tracked down the source (which escapes me at this moment) and they sent me samples. They're 2x2" and about 1/4" thick. Maybe 3/8" can't remember. Anyway, they were laid as tile was, sanded, sealed and actually grouted. I have never forgotten that and plan to use that idea somewhere in my house! The burled walnut was mesmerizing. Would you mind telling me what the woods are in your 1st and 3rd pictures. The 3rd really speaks to me and I love it. The coloration (on my monitor) is just amazing, and the contrasts on the 1st are just really nice. The 2nd is too busy for my tastes, but paired perhaps with some of the more solid pieces such as in #1, I could be coveting that, too. :)

I love this look! My husband works in a school maintenance building (very old), and the entire building has these floors. And a street in nearby Pittsburgh, also. That proves how sturdy and long lasting they'll be!

The 1st pic is a mixture of oaks (red & white)on top & Doug Fir & small pcs (white oak) on Bottom Middle Pic- Heart Pine and the Last Pic is a mixture of reclaimed red & white. If and when your ready let me know.. I could send you samples. :)

The first pic looks like basket weave at an angle very nice work. If there was a dark hallway I would put the circular light pieces to lighten up the floor at night for trips to the bathroom.

    I love it!

It's very beautiful and so unique! Is it a fairly smooth surface?
  • Pat Dollar Pat Dollar on Jan 29, 2014
I personally don't especially care for the top example but like both the second and third. The second (middle one) is my favorite. It also compliments the rounds treatment done on the walls.

    Yes very smooth... :)

I am wondering what adhesive do you use to adhere this to floor, do you suggest backer board as used in tile floors. Love # 3.

I would to see the top one as a headboard with some high gloss aqua paint underneath and dry brush some thin white paint on top. I love the look of the others very much.

I absolutely love the third. Have a friend in a refurbished warehouse loft condo that has floors like the third pic, and I never get tired of them.
  • Peggy Peggy on Jul 28, 2015
I really like the second one!

I just finished installing one, after hand cutting all of the tiles. It was a much bigger undertaking than I could have ever imagined.

    How is this floor sealed?
  • Liz Liz on Jan 25, 2017

I don't know what you used for grout. I laid barn beams that I had sliced like a loaf of bread. We got 2 bricks from this. Laid it in running brick pattern, leaving space for grout made with sawdust and linseed oil.

Design your floor on paper first, then put design into operation by following through.

Wow, I'd never seen this idea before. It sounds like a time intensive project but awesome. I like the 3rd design the most. Thanks for sharing.

Looks like a lot of work to me. But the end product really is unique and beautiful.
