Depends on your needs. Don't mind going outside for laundry? Put it in the garage. Don't mind stairs? Put it in the basement. Don't mind laundry baskets piling up in your living area? Put it on your main floor. It is helpful to already have water service and a drain where you choose to install it.

As close to the majority of your dirty laundry as possible - the bedrooms and bathrooms. We live in a 90 year old home. Our laundry room was moved from the basement to the second floor about 35 years ago so I was no longer dragging laundry from the bedrooms and batgroom up and down two flights of stairs.
