Painted Concrete Floor

I ripped out an old wheelchair ramp and made our mudroom a welcoming place to enter. I used two different colors of paint to make a diamond pattern on the floor. More details (including ...»
how I prepped the concrete) are on my blog.

Also - this is my first post on Hometalk - so if I am doing it wrong...sorry! :)

I have been thinking of painting my patio. It is made out of large cement blocks and wanted ...»
to do it in black and white, like the floor. Does the concrete have to be treated before you paint it? You really did a great job. Very rewarding.

Front Walkway built out of inexpensive cement pavers, red lava rocks, and solar lights

Our home had a simple walkway with cement pavers, which proved to be a hassle when we mowed the lawn. We finished the walkway simply by digging up the grass, adding red lava rocks, ...»
flowers, and solar lights to boost up our curb appeal!

Re-purposed bed to garden/porch bench.

It is not hard to make a bench from an old bed head & foot board. Finding the right one to make it something special is the problem. For instructions on making one go to my blog http://pjhdesignsoneofakind.blogspot.com

  • First, prepare "butterfly food" by mixing nine parts water with one part sugar. Depending on the size of your jar, you'll use either a tablespoon or a teaspoon. 16
  • Let the mixture boil until the sugar is dissolved, and then let it fully cool before putting it in the feeder.
  • Using your nail and hammer, punch a small hole in the lid of the jar. You're going to be cutting your sponge and you want your sponge to fit tightly through the hole, so keep it small. You can always make it bigger as necessary. 10
  • Cut your sponge into strings about one inch wide, and then pull it through the hole so there is about a half-inch of sponge sticking out from the top of the lid.
  • Remember, you want the sponge to stick tightly even when it's wet, so you might need to make it larger than you think. 1

Gardening: What Can I Plant?

As mentioned on a previous post, our back yard was trashed when he bought the house. What in the world can I plant in these tight areas? We're painting the walls and I have the great ...»
Asian panels in the picture below (enough to cover the entire back wall), but I'm horrible at plants and what to use in planting areas that range from 1' - 18" wide, in horribly hard dirt, for plants that will not damage the pool decking or root deeply enough to seek out water from the pool. Keep in mind we are in the desert in Las Vegas with regular 110 degree Summer days and need something that won't make a mess in the pool. Something narrow and tall would be great for privacy from the 2-story house behind us that overlooks our yard. Bamboo would be a difficult option uinless we build curved planters and line them because of its running roots and potential pool damage. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

What to put on a fence? My neighbor started blooming jasmine many years ago, it is so ...»
beautiful! When it blooms it is snow white and covers my fence from the side yard to the back yard, about 150+ feet. When it blooms it is a white sheet! Litle care is required, just love and water! Also in Texas there is a vine that is called a Potato vine, has very large leaves and is very hardy.

We seem to be getting green healthy looking plants but even tho they bloom, the blossoms fall off? This is esp. true of the zucchini plant?
