I have potted petunias both front and back and the squirrels thought it was their personal buffet. I have resorted to garlic powder sprinkled all around the base of the plants and it's working. You have to sprinkle often but it's cheap and effective.

Turns out it was slimy slugs eating the petunias. I spread crumbled egg shell around the plants and dusted them with insect repellent.

NO! Small animals are dtawn to the egg shells and will eat or lick them and die! Please, dont poison innocent cats, dogs, etc. Encourage possums!!! They will save your flower beds, believe me. They are a Godsend. Meanwhile, find a SAFE alternative. Just spending 5 ninutes a nite, handpicking them off is the only other sure bet. Ask your local nursery for animal safe ideas. NOT Lowes or Home Depot.
