The reason I asked this is concern of falls (broken hips) as well as ease to keep clean

Thea, here is a link that talks about the 4 best flooring solutions for the elderly, and discusses the plusses and drawbacks of each. I never thought about flooring solutions while my mom was alive, and now that I am aging, and you have posed this question, I think it would be in my best interest to consider this myself. Thanks for the question; I hope this is of help to you :)

Just about any flooring will be slippery when it is wet. Make sure your bath mat and any rugs have really good gripping on the bottom to keep them from slipping out from under your feet as you walk on them. Also think about getting some kind of handrails to grab when you get up and down from in the tub, and also one to grip when you get out of the tub by the front wall. If you are worried about falling in the tub, think about getting one of the shower stools that you can get, with or without a back. Had to do all of this for my hubby as he has problems lifting his legs and some balance problems.

Okay I had this problem as well I am 73 and I have no internal balance due to disease so I have requested my bathroom floor to be a non slippery tile do not use slate as if you do fall it makes it much worse

We installed the vinyl with texture that looks like slate for my Mom. Very pretty and not slick like tile

Vinyl flooring. Easy to clean, seamless and has a little give to it unlike tile or would. Could mean the difference in a broken hip if a fall occurs

I would use cork flooring.. it's nonslip, its durable, it handles water very well... it's a renewable resource and.. it really is attractive

Plenty of grab bars in and out of tub, a transfer bench for the tub so your not stepping in an out. If you have rugs, make sure you use carpet tape to fasten down. A grab bar next to the toliet, a raised toliet seat. I recently put in click and lock laminate travertine flooring.
