if you a planning on putting a new floor down just install it over the linoleum. I would suggest installing an underlayment right over the linoleum this way it acts as more insulation..

you can paint it in patterns and cover w a sealer or just lay stuff over it.
Some of the old lanoleums had asbestos in them so take precautions.
