How do I keep stray cats from using my flower bed as a litter box?

I shredded Irish Spring soap...several bars...applied it to my garden...not even birds come near my flowers. ..except in my hummingbird garden, where there is no soap...
my neighbor had FIVE cats and they all used to use my front planter as a litter box. i've resorted to leaving the cuttings from the rose bushes to accumulate at base of plants
doesnt look that great, but no longer foul stench coming into the living room.
Citrus peelings should also do the trick. Cats hate the sting of the citrus smell.
I use chicken wire laid on the bed. Plants grow thru it, or you can cut it with wire cutters to lay around established plants. Sprinkle a little bark or mulch around and it disappears. I've also heard of using chili powder or flakes in the beds;--seems easier and quicker, but not so long lasting.
I have heard moth balls. I tried red pepper and the other pepper derivative products which smell so bad you can't enjoy being near your flower beds even to weed. The cats were even getting in my greenhouse planting trays.
Put rocks in it. They don't like the texture and they get hot
Use a motion sensor attached to a hose, available a Home Depot or Lowes.
Another thing I have had success with is clam shells, oyster shells, and broken ceramic...or simply larger stones they can't move. They cover the dirt, slow water evaporation and block weeds. A win, win all around.
