How do I know if I should sand and stain an old dresser or just stain?

    Sand first. Not only will your dresser take the new stain better, the sanding will remove any stains that are there and even out those little nicks that have been over time.

    Or there are paints that no sanding and priming is needed. But if you don't want color... definitely sand first!

    Agreed - if you want to paint, you can chalk paint without sanding and if not, do a light sanding first
