How to paint over wall paneling?

I have dark brown paneling on my walls that I want to paint. I heard that some people will fill in the dark lines to make it smooth before painting. Anyone know what it is I need to use?

Sure, use wood putty to fill in the lines and sand it down for a smooth surface when it dries. Apply a primer and when that dries , you're ready to paint .

I wouldn't do that. I would use a good primer and paint and let the texture show through--- it is a great look.

Thirty years ago we bought a home with dark brown paneling in the family room.

We did not prime, we did not sand...we just painted over it. a light color as the other walls. Never a problem, .. nothing ! Ten years ago I painted if to refresh the room, it looks great, blends in with the other walls, and no unnecessary work.

Just paint it.... do not get involved with details.....
