How and when to prune fig tree

My fig tree is sprouting branches from all over. Figs on each branch. I have pruned in Fall when leaves fall but this year it's sprouting all over the ground. Help?

We had a wet spring, followed by excessive heat, my figs are not edible and dropping, hope you have a better crop!
Yup - they'll do that. I cut the little sprouts off all the time right next to the ground. I don't know what type of fig tree you have, but the figs on mine do not grow on the branches that are parallel to the ground, but only after the branch has turned upright toward the sky. I also prune after the last frost as I find when I prune earlier, more branches die back from the frost.
