How can I paint my old coffee table?

My heavy, old (1976) coffee table has 3-inch round, intricate legs. I want to paint them shiny black and do the least amount of sanding possible. Do I need to remove the varnish(?) with paint remover?

You could use black chalk paint and use polycrylic in clear gloss.
You could use some Liquid Sandpaper to rough up for painting, just wipe on and wipe off.
You can use Paint Deglosser to dull the surface before you repaint.
