How do you clean dirty brick around a fireplace left from the flood?

We have one level of red brick around the fireplace that we have tried to scrub and clean. Nothing changes....it is still brown and dirty. We found a very expensive solution ($100 per gal) but want to find a cheaper product or mixture. Help!!!

  • I would spray with hydrogen peroxide then rinse with clear water BUT I would be concerned about the long term effect of peroxide on the brick - may make it crumble and you do not want that to happen - probably why the solution is $100 a gallon.

Here is an idea - read the ingredients on the expensive stuff - see if you can duplicate it by purchasing the ingredients separately and mixing up yourself and be cheaper maybe?

$100 isn't much if you consider the life of the house you will enjoy

Yes it is. FEMA has not helped our community very much and after losing everything, $100 is a lot of money! This does look like our only option. Thank you for your time!

Judy Parker CauseyHometalker - TSP is a good product for cleaning. Read the manufacture's instructions. Are you on a concrete slab? If you can protect the inside of your home, power wash the brick and using a wet dry vac. Lot of prep work because of the water. Upload pictures with your SmartPhone it will help with your suggestions.

Reply to Norris720... you can find in the Cleaning section of any Hardware of Big Box.

      Masonry

TSP cleaner is excellent for cleaning masonry. Be aware, however, that where there’s extreme mortar staining or efflorescence, muriatic acid will be what you need rather than TSP cleaner in order to remove the marks. It’s a more dangerous substance than TSP cleaner, so research and take proper measures before handling.

Have you tried hydrochloric acid? But you don't want to get any on you or the new floors. This may be a real reason to paint all the fireplace bricks. Bless you, honey. We had friends who lost everything, too, in the floods in La. 😇
