Whoa! Way too much burgundy. Slipcover the couch a lighter colour, maybe a tan linen. If you insist on keeping the carpet, which I wouldn't, paint the walls nice tan/mushroom colour. Then you can use the burgundy drapes and add some throw pillows in a similar shade, in a print or plaid. A few pops of burgundy accessories around the room, mixed in with some sage green and your room will be up to date and not suffocating the way it would be if you kept every surface burgundy.

Ok if you have a wall that can be an accent wall in the room ,paint that wall the color, same as the sofa (,if its in good condition) or the same color of the carpet and you want it to be the focal point. Paint the other walls a neutral medium grey,or beige . you can work off those colors for accents in the rest of the decor . The white sheers will be nice as they will not saturate the room in Burgundy. cannot see any photo ,so i am working in the dark here. i have a burgundy sofa against a red wall which i love and also use other colors of red and burgundy in the room. flowers and pillows are a good accent. Make sure you have some brass in the room and a touch of black. Blessings to you.
  • If you are working with a smaller budget and replacing big ticket items such as the sectional and carpet are out of the question, that paint and curtains would be where to start. Look at Oatland Subtle taupe or Woodrow Wilson Putty at Lowes (Valspar colors) fir the walls-neutral colors which are a beige that makes white trim stand out plus these are colors that go with anything. I would change the curtains to a creamy, beige, tan linen or even a sheer with some texture such as a pale stripe or even a stenciled look. (I check out JCP website and look at their drapes for ideas). Slip covers can be quite pricey so maybe invest in a neutral color (cream, tan, beige) throw pillows and afghans/throws to drape over the sofa to help neutralize the burgundy. What color is your trim? White would be too stark if you have dark carpet and I would think about about more of a subdued white that would "pop" with the neutral walls. I would get rid of any burgundy accessories and use creams, light blues and/or sage greens in subdued patterns to calm down the burgundy. UPdating the lighting will help and even a can of brushed silver or oil bronzed spray paint will help bring new life back to candlesticks and outdated and boring knick knacks. Good luck. and pictures always help.

If you are not going into a complete redo right now, I would suggest a "parchment" color. Yellow is across the color wheel from red so this would be a good family...however, parchment is an almost white with a tint of yellow. Golden and Burgundy always go together. I would skip the white sheers and go for cream ones. A white slip cover might be a bit much, but a cream throw and/or pillows would work. You might want to take a swatch of your paint to match the fabric and make some pillow colors.

If painting is all you have in mind, try something in the beige-to-mushroom family, or a light gray. You definitely need a neutral in there, but not true white. You might also consider a few pillows or accessories that are largely neutral, but pick up the burgundy and plum in small quantities. I'd also want to lose the burgundy sheers, replacing the sheers with neutral sheers to cut the overwhelming burgundy.
