Make A Shadow Box Console Table From An Old Piece of Wood

I found the old piece of wood at a flea market for $5! The vendor said he just cut it that day. I don’t know if it is true or not, but I was thrilled to buy it! It is cedar so it had a really nice wood design which I wanted to highlight.
I really wanted the detail of the wood to show, so I left it natural after sanding it. Then I gave it two coats of DecoArt Triple Thick Gloss Glaze which you can find here DecoArt TG01-9 Triple Thick Gloss Glaze, 8-Ounce Triple Thick Gloss Glaze
My Dad helped me cut the board in two. He has all the tools and a great set up as he builds and sells chicken coops in his retirement.
We attached the two boards two a piece of 1/2″ plywood cut to size. This left a perfect gap that I could fill with crushed sand and shells. The possibilities are endless for this type of table. It’s almost like a shadow box.
Once I had the board I was on the hunt for legs. D. Lawless Hardware to the rescue! They sent me these awesome black steel table legs that included everything I needed for this console table. The legs are 34.25″ high which is the perfect height. I simply attached them to the wood with the included wood screws. It couldn’t be any easier. I love the mix of the the wood with the industrial look of the legs. Because the table was so narrow we had to attach the legs at an angle which actually looked cool!
I poured the triple thick gloss glaze over the shells to seal it letting it dry for several hours then added a second coat once it was dry.
The black legs look so sleek against the rustic wood. This is a perfect height for a sofa table or console table.

Nice job! Gives me ideas from some the wood slats I pulled off of the wall in my basement (my house is over 100 years old).
