Ever wondered how to repaint those ugly, old, wood cabinets? Using the right paint and techniques can make all the difference!
  1. To start, take off all cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Take off any hinges (if attached to exterior of cabinet box). Also remove any "bumpers" (felt pads on back of cabinet doors).
  2. Next, de-gloss the doors to rough up the finish and clean off any grease and grime. Make sure to get into all crevices and corners of the cabinets.
  3. If desired, use a painter's tape to tape off cabinet boxes. This will alleviate cleanup when project is finished.
  4. Next, apply a stain-blocking primer to ensure none of the dark, stained color bleeds through. The thicker the primer is applied, the better (within reason). Prime both the cabinet boxes and the cabinet doors.
  5. Next, apply two coats of the General Finishes Milk Paint. There are many colors to choose from. These pictures show the “Snow White” color because a clean and simple color palette was desired. Disclaimer: the painting is a bit tedious, but it’s a very thick paint that creates a beautiful cover. If the paint seems too thick, thin out with a small amount of water.
  6. To finish, apply three coats of the General Finishes High Performance top coat. This gives an extraordinary finish, which is extremely close to a factory finish. The top coat can be tinted with about 10-20% of the Milk Paint, which allows for even better coverage. This step will be applied faster than the Milk Paint and also drys faster.

General notes:

  • A paint brush or paint roller can be used, depending on the finish that is desired. A brush will leave some semblance of wood grain on the final finish. A roller will not. If using a brush, make sure to follow the graining of the wood while painting.
  • Adding new hardware that fits the existing cabinet door holes also gives the cabinets a fresh look.
  • New hinges can be purchased or existing hinges can be spray painted.
