How can I repair this to make it look like the original piece?

Bought this cedar chest for $20 . Overall it's on good shape, but there are a few places there are chunks of wood missing, mainly where the previous owner reattached the top.
What can I use to patch it up, and attach the top to make it look better thanks it does now. If I could get it back to its original state that would be fabulous.

I think the easiest way would be to remove that piece entirely and replace it.

There is a wood epoxy filler which can help you to fill in the missing wood. This stuff is really strong. Use masking tape to help you form the necessary gaps and then smooth out the top. It can be sanded and then painted.
