Yay or Nay?

Jill B
by Jill B
Had a great idea to transfer branches on to this cabinet. The original cabinet was stained a dark brown. So I thought would just leave the branches the wood color and paint white around it. I have one coat of white and it will take at least one more. It is alot of work....do I continue and finish it? Is it a good idea? or do I paint over it and go with plan B? Thoughts? Thanks.

I love it Jill. Go for it! May I add that in the future if you do something like this. Using painters tape to cover what you want to stay stained. Burnish the edges and then paint. Granted it will take a bit of time to cut all the pieces of tape and place it, but it sure will making painting easier.

Fantastic idea! If you can, I would add a third bird on the branches on the other side to balance the design (maybe a red or blue bird) and then continue! This is going to be stunning. Yours in art,Pamela

@Sweet Pea Studio I think Sweet Pea is right...this is going to be STUNNING! But I think you will be most pleased when you are finished! In fact, while I think a second coat is a great idea, I don't think this has to be a polished finish...a few splotches may give it a little character. Keep us posted!

I think it's fantastic! You're very artistic to have used the natural wood like that. I want to know how in the world you ever painted around it with all those small branches and such? That must have been a ton of work! It's definitely a yea from me!

  • Eileen Eileen on Feb 03, 2014
Looks good. How about a faux finish on the painted part? Like ragging? It might not be so painstaking. Or comb-paint it? If you used a darker color on the outer border of the front, where there are no branches, it would frame your art very nicely and give it a finished look.
    • Jill B Jill B on Feb 03, 2014
@Eile I already completed it...minus the wax coat....still need to do that...the process was painful! haha, but I do like your idea of a dark border. Thank you! Posted completed pic on another post. :)

I really like it, Jill. I live in the country and love beauty and whimsy. This has both. I do think a dark brown stone top would compliment it nicely with white birch branches in a vase sitting on top. We are avid bird watchers and I could see this in my home. Wonderful project!
    • Jill B Jill B on Feb 03, 2014
@Venessa O Thank you for the kind words! A dark top would be cool. :)
  • Jmarie813 Jmarie813 on Feb 03, 2014
That is gorgeous!!! I think that having different shades in the white makes it look more realistic...i wouldn't change a thing-in fact,it's so beautiful that it left me breathless!! i love nature & birds..maybe satin shellac to preserve it..Very creative!!! LOVE!!!
    • Jill B Jill B on Feb 03, 2014
@Jmarie813 Thank you so much! I did however already make the white more uniform, but I did heavily distress in areas...which don't really show well in my final photos, but I am really pleased with the piece. You can see the final in another post on my profile. :) (though you may be disappointed if you really liked the faded white.) I do have to finish with a wax yet as I used chalk paint.

  • Patty Patty on Feb 04, 2014
I checked it out and it is gorgeous, I'm glad you didn't put brown trim on it, I think it would have taken away from the simplicity and beauty of the art and would have made the cabinet look to much like a block. It is perfect!!!
  • Christine Christine on Feb 04, 2014
Oh, how lovely. I think it's beautiful just as it is. Ok, maybe a 2nd coat, but I can't tell on my monitor. This is really well done.
    • Jill B Jill B on Feb 04, 2014
@Christine Thank you Christine. Take a look at the final photos I posted on my profile. Let me know what you think! :) I put another 2 coats on and heavily distressed it.
  • Christine Christine on Feb 05, 2014
Jill, I do like the final product! Just so fanciful. I also like it without the brown edges. If you ever can't get adhesive off something, or the heavy grease layer TSP won't take off kitchen pieces, believe it or not, a quick layer of Citristrip lets you just wipe it away. You can leave it on for awhile if you want to remove the finish, but if you're just going for gunk, it's fantastic. Plus, no space suit or flesh-eating chemicals. I wouldn't ever use shellac or -urathanes on it as suggested above. They both yellow. If you choose to top coat it in addition to the wax, I'd use polyacrylic. It doesn't yellow. May I suggest when you "heavily distress" not to distress the flat surfaces too much? Unless they're where someone would lean, kick, or actually touch. It's the corners and raised pieces that get the most work. When the flat areas are distressed too much, the piece becomes leopard-ized. Let the flat pieces show the cracking that occurred when you painted over the varnish! Your "heavily distressing" looks like another's soft touch. It's perfect. Very very nice. Keeping or selling?
    • Jill B Jill B on Feb 05, 2014
@Christine Great advice Christine!!. :) I also use polyacrylic on anything I don't wax. The reason I sanded the part that crackled was because when I painted the first coat it really showed all my brush strokes and was so uneven. I actually liked how it crackled but there was no way to make it more uniform without sanding the whole piece. The 2 ends still have crackle as I didn't sand any of that except the edges. What is leopard-ized? And my heavily distressed is probably someone's lightly distressed. It become heavy for me when I do more than the edges. :) I LOVE this piece, but I made it with the intent to sell.

Actually Jill, I have to favorite this one to remember it. I have become one picky repurposer and, in the near future, blogger. I would never copy it mind you, but it's an inspiration for the unpredicted for sure. Thanks for sharing!
    • Jill B Jill B on Feb 06, 2014
@Meliss Etner Thanks Meliss for the very kind words. I am not concerned at all if you copy or take the idea and run! Each painter puts their own mark on each piece they do and none can ever be the exactly the same which is awesome....each is unique. I did however finish the piece and made the paint more uniform, then I did distress. I have attached a photo below. (I also have a separate post from beginning to end on my profile.) You seem to have loved the other pic, so this one may not appeal to you as much. :) but I am very happy with the end result. Thanks again for the very lovely comments. I really appreciate it. Would love to see some of your work.
