A Style Matching Dilemma

Vicki K on Feb 02, 2014A Chesterfield sofa is English in origin, formal, library-looking. It responds to bookshelves of books, fancy draperies, and wing-back chairs. Aubusson rugs, traditional paneled walls, etc. But if you do that, it's very stuffy-looking. I'd combine it with different eclectic pieces like the bottom photo - just keep the same color-ways going, from light to dark, 3 in number. Main, medium, small. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Chris aka monkey on Feb 02, 2014i don't like matchy matchy either and i love the green sofa i am over brown altogether.... i am sure you could find wingbacks with tufted backs in a pattern that would go with the sofa then just have fun with it filling in with pieces you love don't stress too much xxHelpful Reply

Polly Zieper on Feb 04, 2014The green sofa is GORGEOUS!!!so unique! And the rectangular ottoman what looks like salmonlooks great against the background of the brick wall!I'd look for a small rug and/or throwpillows or lampshade that have those 2 colors, plus maybe a butter yellow, to tie the room together. It looks great!I agree, I can't take the matchy-matchy look. Down here we have a store called 'Rooms to go', where you literally buy every piece of furniture for a room, lamps, area rug, etc. I love the look that you've got-unique pieces, a classic lookmaybe even antiques?Helpful Reply

Sue on Feb 04, 2014Love the second photo. I would not put the very modern artwork with that grouping. The ottoman is gorgeous and the sofa table would look great behind the sofa. I think everything else would be perfect!! You could use the bench from the first pic for a pop of color. You do have a good eye. You can do it!!Helpful Reply

Jim L on Feb 04, 2014The green sofa is great. I would use those two chairs, with a table between them. The bench would be a nice ottoman/coffee table. IF you opt for the wing chairs as suggested, I would not use ones with the tufted back...to much like the sofa...if you opt for the brown sofa, do not use the brown leather chairs...be sure to add side tables and lots of lamps...you should have a place for everyone to put a drink and every chair should have a light source.Helpful Reply

Pirate on Feb 04, 2014Hi, agree with Viki K ...to me the top photo is far more interesting. After neutrals, green plays well with others better than any other color so you can do a lot with the chesterfield. I'd consider not having any other tufted pieces in the room but the color of the bench is spot on, picks up the brick and pops. Tufting is hot right now but it too will wane. The chesterfield will survive the transition because it's a classic and revel in its awesomeness but the bench is nothing special. Good Luck!Helpful Reply

Cheryl Rafuse on Feb 04, 2014I have this problem a lot with my own scenario. I cannot resolve my own issues but I can see the answer to your question clearly. In my opinion the green sofa is one off the hottest classic styles of the moment and I love look. Good luck. Keep fighting the matchy matchy look, it creeps up on you and you are like oh dear I've done it again. Stick to your story board, study it and play with it, it's free, then decide what pieces to invest in that you keep forever and what fun things you can add that can be used else where or replaced when the whim and budget allow. Most of all please yourself only and have fun.Helpful Reply

JoieBK on Feb 04, 2014I love the sofa, but don't like matching stuff. My home is whatever I like. I think it is about making your home suit your family. I have all desert colors on my walls, tend to be more southwest in my decor, but my office is buttercup yellow on one wall the is about 12 feet to the vaulted peak, the other three walls are a beautiful blue I can't even describe. The yellow wall is the "canvas" if you will, for all those favorite photos I have taken that I want to see without opening a photo album. It is a delightful room but truly breaks all the "rules".Helpful Reply

Kelly Boettcher on Feb 04, 2014I have a brown sofa like that and love it... but that green sofa is fabulous!!! I do not think that it has to "match" the style of the other furniture. Add a throw pillow with the green in it to another chair, or maybe some artwork that ties the colors together. Bottom line.. if you love it, go for it!Helpful Reply

Pat Mountfort on Feb 04, 2014As a decorator the best advise is to buy what you love. You will find that everything will have something in common that drew you to it. Find a magazine with rooms you love in it and copy one. I have to say the first picture with the green sofa, everything in that pic looks great together. You have to live there make it a room YOU are comfortable in. AND HAVE FUN!!!!!Helpful Reply

Line Lauzon on Feb 04, 20141st picture with green sofa is my favorite. I would not change a thing. Matchy Matchy is much more interesting than a set of sofa and chairs that matches like in the 2nd picture.Helpful Reply

Kara Spurlock on Feb 04, 2014There are no rules! If you like it get it. If you try to keep everything same exact style and so on , it will look generic! Mix and match and always keep an eye for a way to bring or enhance character in your room!Helpful Reply
