Dig up the sod, take out stones and roots, and make a level surface on the dirt that is at least 2 1/4" below the surrounding ground level - that's the thickness of a standard brick. That will make the surface of your walkway level with the ground around it. Add sand can help even out the ground. Lay the brick, using a hammer and chisel to cut ones that need to be cut, adding or taking away sand to make each brick level. Sprinkle sand over the finished surface and use a broom to sweep it into the cracks. You'll probably have to repeat the sweeping after the first rain, which will cause the sand to settle in further.
