How can I do a bathroom makeover on a skinny shoestring budget?

My tub fell through the floor. Only a toilet is in there now. The sub-floor is caving. The bathroom needs fixing from floor to ceiling. I live on $840.00 a month so that leaves me with very little to do the bathroom. The other problem is I am disabled and couldn't do the work myself so that means paying someone as well as purchasing the materials. I am hoping that one or two of you might have some suggestions that could lead me in the right direction. I have tried, to my utter shame, some charity organizations- 22 to be exact and it all ranged from not having the ability to do that sort of work to not being insured {them or me} and everything in between. I am a 64 year old woman with epilepsy, a really bad leg, and degenerative spine disease. I can still do things like painting, measuring, cleaning {sweeping/mopping though it takes me awhile}. so ladies and gentlemen if you have any ideas at all that will help get my bathroom going and growing I be so grateful. I am not looking for fancy. In fact, I don't want fancy. I just want a simple working bathroom. Oh, the dry wall is not appropriate for a bathroom. Some kids put that up for me. I didn't know any better about that. My sincere thanks to one and all who reads this. No pic or video....I'm too ashamed for that. ~D~

There are some churches that will help with this type thing.Members of the congregation will get together and help, and there are people thefe who do some of this work as their livelyhood. There usually are people who have handyman skills also.Another idea is to put a note on bullitin boards in hardware stores, grocery stores and home improvement stores, those that have them. You might even call someone who advertises this type work and ask if they or someone they know can help you.Sometimes your local Social Services can help, but until they say that they do have help, don't give them your address 'cause they can be buttheads.Good luck and God bless 😊

You are very welcome dear. Not sure if there are Habitat For Humanity stores in NY,but down here they do.If you do have them, that is a place you can buy cheap materials to stock pile until you're ready to start putting everything back together. You might find a construction worker who moonlights on the side to help.I know what you mean about people not trusting anymore.Makes it hard for us who can be trusted because of what others do to smash that all to hell.

Ms D,I will be praying for you.Take care. 😉

What community do you live in? This might help if any of us are in the area and may know of resources you aren't aware of. I'm praying that will be the case.

Western New York. Tennessee is a lovely state. Kentucky too. Very sweet of you to reply and hope on my behalf {and pray}. Prayer is such a strength in itself and, for me, is always welcomed with and open heart by me. Thanks again so very much. ~D~

Don't think a shoestring budget's going to be enough love. 😲😲😨

I had a similar situation and had to hire a contractor to redo it. Sorry, but there are no easy answers. If your floor is rotting you have a dangerous situation. Try your local Senior Services agency and see if there is anyone who does charity work. I wish I could tell you better but you will need a professional. If your tub fell through you will need new floor joists, and you need a pro to do that. Good luck.

I would suggest you contact your city government and see if they have any rehabilitation programs that might be able to help you. I've gotten work done on my house through programs like that. This is not a small fix because the structure needs repair. Otherwise, if you belong to a church, ask for help from talented people there, or, if you have anything you can barter (skills - sewing alterations, reading to someone, baking, an antique you don't really care for anymore), there may be someone who has skills and wants what you can provide.

good information. My city has a rehabilitation program for those on fixed income. At no charge they come out and fix properties.

Dear Jennifer, Thank you for writing. And from Australia too. I have a very dear friend who lives in Warrawong,NSW. My budget wasn't always thus. I was a councilor and was paid fairly well. But I was a single mom which left little for retirement and I do not regret that as my children have grown up well. They are miles away from me now but that is part of life isn't it-the leaving of the nest? There were times people just simply helped others out of the kindness of their hearts. I have lived in this area 8 years now and know all of 2 families, the librarian, the bank tellers, and the pharmacist employees and even that isn't on a deep level. I fear you may be right Jennifer. Do you know what really gets me? The fact that I know I am not the only person to be in this situation and the ones who would like to help can't and the ones who can help won't.

There is one thing I do have an abundance of though...hope. I still believe that somehow, some way my problem will get resolved in a positive way. It may take awhile but it will get done. So I guess I just have to dig my heels in and buy a piece or two of sub-floor here and a couple pieces of sheet rock there and when eventually all is gathered save up the cash to pay someone to do the work. That is the only way I see. Thank you for replying Jennifer. I do so very much appreciate it. Enjoy your late Summer/early Autumn months. ~D~

I fear you may be right Jennifer. Ahhh, Australia. I have a friend who lives in Warrawong, NSW. The one thing I have an abundance of is hope. The other is tenacity. I know very few people in the area I live. I guess I will have to dig my heels in and buy what I can until I have all I need. Then save the money for the person{s} who will do the work. I will sell what I can and even start back up with my art work to sell if necessary though it is tough on my leg and back sitting for so long. In the mean time I will buy cheap shower curtains or tarps and rig an outdoor shower stall....{that ought to go over big with the people in the trailer park}. I WILL do what it takes as long as it harms no one,not even myself. It may take an extremely long time but I truly have no choice. This is the only home I can afford. Thanks for writing. It must be Autumn there or close to it. My favorite time of year. TY again. ~D~
