I love the look of plank canvas and happened to have a ton of paint sticks left over from a previous project. That's when the lightbulb clicked on.
I used antique white chalk paint and a grey acrylic wash (3 parts water to 1 part paint) to achieve the distressed look I wanted. Simply brush on the antique white, then feather out the edges. You want the coverage to be strong in some areas and light in others. Then brush on the grey wash, making sure to let some of the natural wood color still show. Next I used some nautical stencils with the antique white. I sanded lightly over some areas of the stencil to give it a distressed, aged look. I added vinyl lettering, in soft bronze, and then sealed with Modge Podge acrylic spray.
