Why did my Hydrangeas in pots die?

Hi, over the years I have planted many hydrangeas in pots. Our lit is mostly shade. Only 1 of the plants has survived. Can anyone share why my hydrangeas in pots died?

Jeanne, You've said "our lit is mostly shade." Hydrangeas need full to part sun. Also, when growing anything in pots, eventually the nutrients in the soil that the plant needs is depleted and the plant must be fertilized (you didn't mention whether or not you did that). mine is in the sun, in the ground. water every moning and fertilize in
some hydrangeas need sun like the oakleaf and others do well in dappled sun.
The soil will dry out faster in a pot instead of the ground.
Also check the soil! GOod luck!
