Really depends upon how much usage the piece will get and the overall finish you are looking for. I would use poly for a dining table or kitchen cupboards, but wax finish on a dresser or end table
Wax - as poly. may peel off. Used over acrylic or oil based paint.
I think it really depends on what final look you're going for Sandy. Yes wax will have to be reapplied after a certain amount of time but you're talking a year not a day or a month. Wax will give you the chalk paint look while polyurethane will give you a stronger and longer-lasting finish it will also add a high gloss. I would also recommend if you're going that route to use polycrylic because it does not yellow.
