I used to put up a shade screen for plants and we made a pvc frame, bought a shade screen on line that had grommets in the corners and used small bungee cords to attach to the frame. Then when it was no longer needed it was easy to take apart and store.

A pergola would be beautiful and add value to your property.

Thank you for the courtesy of a reply, but the sego is in a corner, planted among a rock bed. It would require a short, relatively small shade structure. I was thinking of using a stapler to affix screen fabric to some 1x1 posts and sink them into the planter, straddling the palm. I wasn't sure if someone else had already invented a better wheel!
