If going on an extended vacation (6weeks) what is the best way to make sure all house plants stay alive? Hire someone to come in periodically or is there a temporary watering system that can be installed?

i would have someone com in.....and have them stagger when they come over. It will let whoever else is casing the place know that the place is also being watched by some one else.i grew up in a not so nice neighbor hood....drug dealer on one side, pediphile at end of street. Arsonist across the alley.

I agree with Dfm. Better to have someone stop by once a week. Those glass watering globe things won't last 6 weeks, but they will for a week or so. Also, how hot will it be while you are gone? Will you be leaving an air conditioner on, curtains open for light, etc? Better to have someone do that. Get references for anyone you get if you don't know them really well.

For that time period, you are better off to get someone to come in and check your plants periodically. To make things easier for them, you could put your plants in the kitchen sink, or in your bathtubs so they are all together and easier to water...

There are devices, such as watering globes, that you can push into the soil to water gradually. I'm not sure how many it would take for 6 weeks, however. If you absolutely cannot get anyone to care for them, try the globes, but also put all of your plants in the tub if you can and fill it with water about halfway (or more) up the sides of the pots.

  • So happy for you. I would hire someone to come in to check the plants and generally keep an eye out.

If you are going to be away from your home for an extended period of time, you need someone to come in on a regular basis for more than just your plants. Your insurance will be invalid in case of an incident like a hot water tank leaking, if you don't have someone checking our home regularly.

place the plants in the bath tub with a small amount of water.
