Portable a/c units have come a long way. Still research by brand to make sure it is worth your hard earned money. I like Consumer Reports, they give the good, bad and everything in between.
Yes, they do work, but you will need to vent them out of a window.
They are not as efficient as a window unit. Primarily due to the heat they create, even if you vent it out a window, the unit still gets hot, allowing the heat into the room that you are trying to cool. The room will be cool, but you will be paying much more for the luxury. I have window units, no central, and I hate the appearance of them hanging out my windows, but my footprint being smaller is worth it.
All the above comments echo my thoughts, but have you considered a split unit? They are in between a window unit and central air. I have some very limited experience with them but so far they have been good.
A split unit works like this....The unit mounts somewhere outside on level ground. A copper line runs from the unit to the location where you will install the control panel/s. A hole is drilled through the outside wall to the interior of the room where the control unit/s will be hung on a wall (usually only requires a few screws). The power must reach the OUTSIDE unit. An A?C tech must pressure and fill the system as recommended and then just TURN IT ON IN THE ROOM where the control panel/s located. (Some splits can provide cooling to 4 control panels at the same time so it can be extended to 4 rooms or 2 in one room, etc.). Very efficient and cost saving since you only need to run the room you are using.
