Can I Gel stain over polyurethane?

My hardwood floor sustained damage and has dark spots. ( Seller was proud to tell me he applied 7 coats of poly in 1978.) I know repair, tear out, paint, carpet over are options but can gel stain be applied to darken? They are red oak and we like a more Rustic look anyway.

Hi D, That's a lot of poly!! You might want to lightly sand a small inconspicuous area, and try it first!
