What can I plant on a steep hill?

There is grass and then just dirt and weeds along the edge of the woods. What would grow along the edge that doesn't mind getting walked on?

I would have a field of lavender leaving a place along the edge to walk on.
Vinca vine is wonderful. It's a low growing ground cover with glossy leaves and it gets these pretty purple flowers in the springtime. It spreads fairly quickly and would be perfect for this area. I have planted some in areas such as this and it's no maintenance. Very hardy plant and withstands winters or harsh summers
