As a former painter, don't use a roller that high. Use a can you can hang from your rungs so you use both hands. Have a lanyard you can also attach your brush to. If you drop it, it will paint every where it lands.

That said, if you are truely just painting 6" as your question said, vs. 6', I would leave it alone.

It is a 6" wood molding trim around the entire house peaks also . Thinking of using a pole w/ pad to paint from a paint tray. putting rubber mat under the tray so won;t slide. Your thoughts???

they make small roller grids http://www.homedepot.com/p/1-gal-Paint-Can-Grid-RM150/100574929 in several sizes. use this in a can and attach with caribiner to your belt. Might take a bit longer but you won't have to worry about your tray slipping. good luck

Okay that makes more sense. I once painted a three story house and I gringe to remember the ladder "maze" I set up and how dangerous it was. That said, is there a safe way to paint from the roof over the facia edge? Second story painting is tricky at best but if your pad swivels like a swiffer (see photo) you will win the day.

Now, I am 62 and get dizzy wearing thick socks. So, If you have the money please consider hiring a pro. Good luck and when you are done, send us a shot?

You may be able to rent an extention pole. My late husband was a painter when younger. He had a metal pole about 6' long that could be extended another 5'. Then you could add the handle of the paint pad to the end of that. May be a bit unwieldy but with some help you could do it. You'd need help to get pad into paint tray and back up to edge. Walking on shingles is one of the most dangerous things you could do and it degrades the shingle too.
