This "volunteer" plant blooms pretty white flowers . I have tried digging up the root, etc, but it just comes back. It has also started a couple of other places.
I'm not sure but google hummingbird moth. Colors look similar and I don't know where you live but these look pretty big for a moth, yikes!
Moth. they are ok, won't hurt you.
Goliath Moth
Yep, that's a hummingbird moth! They're great night-time pollinators. They love white petunias, and other light-colored night-blooming flowers. You're lucky- they're really cool!

Hummingbird moth
Pretty sure it's a sphinx moth. Go to BugGuide.net to search for a match.
It is a hummingbird moth..... Photographed many when I lived in Iowa!!!
Harmless...leave them alone....
Used to see them all the time when I was little. It's a sphinx moth, we used to call them ladybirds, because they act like a hummingbird.
They are not harmless! They're larva will destroy your flowers. We have been fighting them for years.
I have read that hummingbird moths are the mouth iteration of the tomato hornworm. I am a" bad " gardener because I don't mind sharing with most bugs and all critters. I grow mostly heirlooms so damaged items are set aside and seeds saved for the next year.
I get as much joy from watching my non - human neighbors as I do from the plants. Of course, if I really depended on my garden for total sustenance, I might change my tune. 😉
it is a type of moth/ butterfly
