  • Suit up and dig it out. Or just trim back till summer is over, move your flowers and treat the entire area with vinegar to kill it.

Do NOT touch it! Even with gloves on you will somehow get the Urishiol oil on your skin....my suggestion is to leave it alone or get professional advice on how to get this out of your garden....I have gotten this more times than I can count and I will never touch it again...

I sympathize with your plight. I'm highly allergic and have it everywhere. A word of caution (or two!). If you try cutting it back with a weed eater it will dissipate the poison oil into the air and if you breath it you can actually get poison ivy/oak inside your lungs. Secondly, and critical, do not ever try to burn it for the same reason! Inhaling the smoke can be lethal. My best advice, spray it with vinegar on a hot day. Keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol to apply to your skin and garden tools every 15 minutes or so to wash off the oil. Clean garden tools and gloves when you are done. Remove your clothing and wash immediately. Shower and wash your hair immediately in lukewarm water (hot water opens your pores more). A product called Tehnu helps. They make a barrier cream to wear while you are working and a scrub to use in the shower. Jewelweed slave helps if you get a breakout anyway. If you prefer to hire someone to eradicate it for you, check with a local garden center or lawn care service to see if they can refer you to someone.

Find where it is growing usually Vertical such as a tree. You need to go up about a foot from the botttom start cutting each vine all vines all the way around the tree then about another foot from there do the same thing you will have a band around the tree where none of the vines meet. Yes you must suit from head to toe, I got a little splash of oil on my ear as soon as it itches go to the Dr. And get the shot works way better than the pills. My vine in the top of the tree is now brown!

I hope you realize those brown leaves still contain the oil and can cause a reaction if you touch one.

The best is to dig them out right down to the roots- good luck and don't forget the gloves!

I had the same problem, not wanting to spray the poison ivy amid my flowers. Now I put my hand inside a plastic (grocery) bag and grab the plant, pulling it up by the root. Then with my other (clean) hand, I pull the bag over the plant and off my hand, capturing the plant inside. The bag is then tossed into the garbage can.
