The water in my toilet bowl does not stay in the bowl! Help!

The water drains down to the very bottom of the bowl. Most bowls I am familiar with hold water in them about 1/2 way up. There are no leaks around the base and I checked the crawl space and it is not leaking. I wonder if the seal is a little loose or the drain pipe is a little low not allowing the seal to set properly, which in turn lets air in the toilet causing the water to go down? Would appreciate some additional advice. I would prefer not to tear into this unless I know what I am getting into. Getting too old to do things 2x

Do you know how long the seal has been in it? It's only a piece of wax that goes around pipe and base of toilet. They can dry out after a few years. Also have the sewer system looked at. If the drain has been cracked or otherwise broken it could be upsetting the level.

John, In the tank is a vertical tube (called the overflow tube) and there should be a little (1/4") fill hose clipped to the top. The overflow goes to the bowl and the fill hose fills the bowl while the tank is filling.

Add food coloring to the back of thetoilet in the tank, wait 15 minutes. If the color has shown up in the toilet bowl then you will know its leaking and should replace the flapper

If it is a suction type flush then it needs adjusting.
