Can an acrylic caulk be used on top of grout to patch eroding grout?

I had two bathrooms remodeled about 3 years ago. Much to my dismay, the grout used for the tile on both showers and floors is eroding. I've gotten costs estimates to regrout both bathrooms that seem high - nearly $1500 for both. My handyman has offered to place caulk in the gaps at a fraction of the cost but I'm concerned that this will be a nightmare to "fix" later on.

Question: can an acrylic caulk be used on top of grout to patch eroding grout? Or is this a bad idea that will make the problem worse? Thanks!

It will take you a little elbow grease and a grout saw, but I would remove the areas that are eroding and replace the grout. If the grout is so brittle it is already coming out, it should be relatively easy to remove. Grout saws are hand tools and cheap. Make sure you replace it with the right type of grout for areas that are going to be wet. The original grout should have lasted much longer than 3 years. I would never put caulk down in place of or to patch grout.

Susan is right . It's messy, time consuming but you can do it . Remember to wear gloves when you put in the new grout. And don't forget to seal it properly when its dry. That's why the old one is coming apart. Here's a link to help

Susan and CD - thanks for your input and for providing the link to regrouting tile. I suspected that applying caulk on top of the grout was NOT a good idea but I needed this confirmation. I may try to get another estimate or two - or roll up my sleeves and give it a try myself! Thanks again for taking the time to provide helpful advice.
