I sprinkle cornmeal on and around the mound. They take it into the colony and the queen and it kills them off. I guess it absorbs the liquid in their bodies and they swell up and pop lol. That's what I was told anyway, and it works.
try grits - they eat dry grits and it swells up in their digestive tract and they sorta explode. don't know if it works on fire ants specifically, but it does work on other ants. it has to be dry and not wet.
