i have that problem as well. I use bait traps around the perimeter of the yard and keep them filled. I also cut back vines I had growing on the walls - they were beautiful but served as homes to the rats. I also eliminated anything that could hold water as that was a calling card for visits. We have roof rats as well as pack rats. If you have fruit trees, the only approach is to cut them down. They serve as a local supermarket for roof rats.
Packrats will go after anything they can drag away for their collections. We also got rid of our Rubbermaid shed as the rats were able to gnaw through the base and set up shop in the shed. Also, if you have roof rats, it is important to trim back any trees or foliage that rests on the house or roof. Basically, you have to get rid of any clutter where they could set up a nest. My biggest fear is that they would migrate from the yard into the house So I don't mind taking all these steps to minimize their presence. Good luck.
Clean, clean, clean, get rid of debris, leaves, and traps, traps, traps, be careful with poisons that can harm you, your family, environment, pets, etc....
Well how about a cat or two? Good luck!
Cayenne pepper is good for wild animals. There are commercial sprays or sprinkle some from a container.
you need to get rid of their food source. Keep the grass cut short and remove any plant material that they will use for bedding. Keep the garbage cans shut tight and don't have standing water.
