How to "cut in" top edge better?

I need to paint over dark red but have always struggled with the top edge. I bought a sponge type that did not work and have always used a regular paintbrush. What REALLY works?

Need a paint brush with slanted bristles. If your not that great at painting I would suggest using painters tape too

You can try an edger or painters tape using 1 edge to crate your straight line.If you have popcorn ceiling it is more of challenge. The trick is you need to have a straight line on your wall down from your ceiling it shouldn't meet the ceiling because they usually are not consistent so it won't look straight. You will not see that your wall paint is down a bit just your line is straight. If you already have paint on ceiling cover with flat white if your ceiling is standard color if not use whatever it is. Don't forget to primer red worst color to paint over.

A quality angle brush Semi stiff...use only a very small part of the bristles. A steady hand and view from the proper angle really help too! Steady hand can be achieved by controlled breathing. Add in a good deal of patience and you can achieve your desired result. Ps...make sure the ceiling is finished and cut in properly. It is easier to cut the wall to the ceiling than it is to cut the ceiling to the wall.

I do what Christine and Bonnie suggest. Always hated taping. Takes too much time. I use an angled sash brush. Just dip about 1/4" of the bristles. Place the brush on the wall just slightly below the wall and ceiling corner. Take a deep breath and hold. Move the brush and creep into the corner to create a straight line. Once you get better at it (second wall) you won't need to hold your breath. Just control your breathing.

I should have mentioned popcorn ceiling. Thank you for your input. A stiff angled brush and even breathing, got it.
