You can get the strips of carpet on each step for footing. Check w Home Depot or Lowes Home IMprovements have good ideas.

Carpet padding is usually stapled down. You'll have to remove each staple with pliers a tedious job but absolutely doable, if you plan on refinishing the wooden stairs after that you will see they will tiny holes but you can treat those anyway you choose

I agree with Karen. Sometimes from lots of use the padding sticks to the stairs. You can use Goo Gone to wet down any residue and gently scrape it off.

Take out every staple. If your leaving the wood and refinishing or painting over them you have to putty every hole. Just finished mine. Worth the work!

I was able to get the Staples out, but it is the padding from the OLD Carpet ,that is difficult to Remove. I called 6 different Carpet stores Yesterday. No one seems to have a good idea, besides Scrapping . I am sure that I am not the only one with this problem. Thanks, Everyone for the HELP !!!

Is a thin layer of the pad left stuck to the steps? If so, I would try Goo Gone and a razor blade or putty knife.
