How about wooden pallets?? You can find them free many places. It takes some work to pry the wood apart, and do need to be sanded, but they're FREE!

Use wooden pallets. They are usually made of oak. 'Ive seen a wall in a church,

finished like this. All cut in different lengths & fitted together. The pallets are usually free. You would need a saw & a hammer to remove the nails. It made a nice look.

Do you have a newspaper business or a grocery store near you? They often have wooden pallets they give away. You have to take them apart, but FREE is about as inexpensive as I can find. Then if you have a Salvation Army store or a Value Village store nearby they often have furniture that has been donated to them. There are all kinds of inexpensive pieces that can be cut into whatever you want. I have got some really nice Maple wood, some oak wood, and some wood that I don't know the name of, but it's useable too. Good luck. Hey since I don't know what style of accent wall you want...you can use wooden slats...cut them different lengths or all the same lengths then make a pattern for your wall. Sometimes Building Stores...Lowes, etc. have left over pieces of wood that they will either give away or charge a very low price .

  • I have had good luck in the scrap section of home improvement stores. Try starting there.

You can use fence pickets, or 1x3 or 1x4s, most fence pickets are 1x4s. I used them to use over a friend's brick fireplace. You can also use pallet wood, which you can usually find for nothing.

You don't say what you want the wood for. Is it to resurface a wall or are you shoring up the studs in your walls? We took 1/4 inch luan (thin paneling plywood without grooves or color) and put over the old paneling. This then gave us 1/2 inch walls that were sturdier to hang things on. On the seams you can get 1/4 inch by 2 inch slats in Lowes to place over the seams and in the middle of the 4 x 8 sheet of luan for a nice design. You can then paint or stain the wood, or even wallpaper. Our mobile home looks fantastic with these techniques! Good luck! (We are also on Social Security.)
