If they are red they are Lily beetles. I use Bayer Tree and Shrub. Follow directions for shrubs and pour around the bottom of each plant. The plants pick it up and the beetles will dissapear in just a day or two.

Seven works on them. Just sprinkle the powder on the plant...l would do all the lilies even if you don't see any bugs. They are matters at hiding in the foliage and drop to the ground when you get near them. I try to remember to sprinkle Seven on the ground around the lilies in the spring to get them before they even start! Check under your leaves for the orange eggs and squish them before the become gross nymphs! They aren't ready to get rid of.

Spray them with soapy water that will take care of them without using chemicals .

Insecticidal soap will help without being toxic. Avoid spraying the blooms, buds.

I usually spray mine as soon as I can see significant foliage before they bloom and then once again when blooms appear. Those horrid bugs appear every year!

I do "bug patrol" every day. Just pick them off! If you see any egg mush, remove the leaf.

This is also a wonderful way to explore your garden and the beneficial insects that you need.

I remember growing up with the early morning chore of bug patrol. Now, I realize the invaluable lessons my mother was buring into my crabby teenage brain.

Use Fels Naptha soap. Dissolve some in warm water, place in spray bottle, when cool spray plant with it. Be sure to get under the leaves.

btw - adding coffee grounds around the plants will both help to control them, and fertilize the plants.

I no longer plant oriental lilies....red lily beetle consumes and we raise bees so don't use pesticides. To maintain, I find they are too time consuming for me.

For years our plants were decimated by the Lily leaf beetle (red) and hand picking them off (drop into bottle of water) did the trick. We also stopped planting lilies for 2 yrs and then replanted; here we are 5 yrs out and voila, no beetles. You could also use a soap spray, rather than toxic chemicals. Please avoid chemicals; they kill beneficial insects as well and they expose you to cancer-causing agents. No joke about the chemicals.

Had the same problem last year, the stems and leaves looked and felt like tissue paper. two years ago the lilies had just started to multiply. In my research I also found out that they also eat the roots. I pulled all my lilies out last year and the lily beetles disappeared. This year a few strays lilies grew, but very tiny. Instantly the beetles were back, they came out of the dirt when I disturbed it. We have used homemade insecticidal soap, but we've had a very wet summer. I am in London Ontario...
