That would be up to your city building codes and permit department. Call and ask. Then get an architect to draw up plans to get a permit.
My husband is a contractor and he said to definitely do some research on getting the permits you need and check with your city department on any building codes. Every state is different. if the state allows you to do it yourself please get some advice from a contractor friend or someone who knows more about it before you start especially if you are dealing with load bearing walls and electricity.
That's something I'd ask an architect or contractor. you definitely want whatever you do to be lega, safe and up to code!
