First, brush off and vacuum up as much loose soot as possible. Then an all purpose cleaner like Quick n bright and a good stiff brush. Some people may say strong chemicals like TSP or acids, but it's really the scrubbing that cleans it off, no mater what you use, so I like to avoid having to breathe all that while cleaning in an enclosed area! A wet dry vac can suck up the nasty rinse water too.

I use a spray bottle filled with a small amount of dish soap in a full amount of water. Spread a drop cloth around fireplace. I put an old towel on top of drop cloth to catch excess water. Starting at the top of fireplace, use a small scrub brush after spraying a small area. Spray again to remove dirt you have scrubbed. It will drain down the fireplace. Have done this several times for forty years. It doesn't take long to get them job done.
