When it's 90 degree weather or more, or raining, I can't be out in my garden! The weeds are tough!

You only other option is to smother them outs with newspapers and cardboard.

Try a scuttle hoe, quick and easy. Get out there before the sun is on it and you'll be sipping iced tea on veranda when the temps rise. The weeds are going to come back, whether you scalp them or pull them. Make it easy on yourself. Try corn gluten meal in the early spring to discourage germination of the weed seeds, provided you don't allow wanted plants to reseed.

I use cardboard topped with mulch In between the rows. This can then be turned under next spring to enrich the soil.

I know people who swear by newspaper under their mulch.

There are products that have both fertilizer and weed killer in them. Weed and Feed is one of them. You will need to weed well first, the. Sprinkle this throughout the garden. It works fairly well!

I use 2 layers of newspaper, which I spray with water as I go. It works very well, keeping plants more evenly moist as well as helping soil temperature stay about the same. Either in fall or spring, you can work the disintegrating paper into the soil. You may have a pop through weed here & there, but it saves hours in the garden!

  • Smother them! Newspaper, plastic, cardboard. Be grateful you have rain!
